MANSFIELD’S Tour de France rider, Simon Gerrans, saw his tilt at the 2014 Tour undone at the finish of the first stage.
The opening stage was full of action, with Gerrans caught among the chaos, crashing in the final 300 metres, taken down in the sprint by Mark Cavendish.
He was credited with bunch time, but finished down the standings in 166th to lose any chance of claiming the yellow jersey.
Despite this, the Orica-GreenEdge rider was on the start-line to try his luck in Stage 2.
However, he again had a fall, but at the same time improving his position.
In Stage 2, Gerrans finished 58th, which sees him sitting in 60th position, some one minute 45 seconds back after Sunday’s leg.
