Le tour continues

STAYING OUT OF TROUBLE: Simon Gerrans taking a ‘break’ next to the Lotto Belisol team car.

THE Tour de France continues, but without much luck for local rider Simon Gerrans and his OricaGreenedge team.

The ‘highlight’ of the week for Gerrans, as with all riders, was stage five over the pave (cobblestones) of northern France.

“My job today was to stay out of trouble, hit the hand break as soon as we got to the pavé, to not take any risks whatsoever, finish in one piece and within the time limit,” Gerrans wrote after the stage.

“I didn’t even get to the first pavé section in the front group.

“There were crashes galore with two or three guys lying on the road every corner for the last 30 or 40km leading into the first pavé section, so the group was split to pieces and I ended up out the back even before the pavé started – I guess that worked out in my favor.”

Gerrans added that he didn’t overly enjoy the stage because it was wet, dangerous and pretty miserable, “however, even in such terrible conditions it was a pretty cool experience racing across the pavé”.
