MERTON’S Victoria Mitchell, although not winning a medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, still did us proud.

Mitchell competed in the 3000 metre steeplechase women’s event coming in ninth overall in a time of 9:49.05 minutes.

In the event Purity Kirui of Kenya took out the gold medal followed by fellow Kenyan Milcah Cheywa and in bronze placing also a Kenyan Joan Kipkemoi.

Australia’s Madeline Heiner placed fourth and Genevieve Lacaze fifth overall.

Mitchell’s ninth place was only 19 seconds behind the three medallists who all came home within one and two seconds of each other.

This was not however, Mitchell’s best time as in a previous event she equalled her time with that of the Kenyans recording her best at 9:30.84 for the same event.
