Shire Sport and Recreation Strategy endorsed by council

EMERGING THEMES: In the Sport and Recreation Strategy paths and tracks for walking and cycling were raised a number of times – that improvements to the network of local walking/cycling paths and tracks such as the Great Victorian Rail Trail are necessary to address current and future community demands.

THE Mansfield Shire 2014-19 Sport and Recreation Strategy was endorsed by council at its August ordinary meeting last Tuesday.

The strategy is based around achieving outcomes through council, community and stakeholders working in collaboration and partnership, especially regarding actions requiring advocacy on behalf of the community.

Actions from the strategy are grouped around facilities, clubs and individuals with ongoing, short, medium and long-term goals.

Goals of the strategy include increasing awareness of the health benefits of physical activity and to increase the overall physical fitness of our population; partnering with the community, clubs and groups in developing our facilities and opportunities for sporting and recreation activity across the shire; and providing direction for council’s sport and recreation officer as well as assist council in prioritising budget allocations.

It takes into account local, regional and national trends.

The strategy also links with existing plans such as the Council Plan, Municipal Health and Well Being Plan and will link with the Mansfield Structure Plan which is still under development.
