Skinner still shooting strong

ON TARGET: Mansfield’s Catherine Skinner is building towards the Rio Olympics.

MANSFIELD’S Catherine Skinner, after a short break in Italy following the Commonwealth Games, headed to the International Grand Pix at Gabala, Azerbaijan last week.

Along with Penny Smith (Bookaar, Vic) and Laetisha Scanlan (Berwick, Vic), Skinner competed in the Women’s Trap, where all three Aussies made it to the highly competitive final stage, shooting high qualifying scores.

Smith displayed confidence beyond her 19 years, making it to the bronze-medal match, only to lose narrowly to Beijing Olympic gold medallist Makela Satu of Finland.

Scanlan and Skinner finished in fifth and sixth positions respectively.

“It is great to see all three girls qualify for the final, all shooting world benchmark scores to make the top six,” national high performance shotgun coach Valeriy Timokhin said.

“Penny showed great composure against an Olympic champion, only being beaten by one target for the bronze medal against Satu Makela-Nummela.”
