MANSFIELD Mt Buller Cycling Club (MMBCC) is looking for a new site to develop a BMX facility and hopes that a landholder will come forward to accommodate them.
After five years in the planning and several applications to Mansfield Shire Council, a report tabled at council’s August meeting recommended the club look for a new site.
Initially five years ago when first proposed the then council was in agreement over the proposal to establish a nationally accredited BMX track on the old DSE mill site at the top of Maroondah Highway and Withers Lane.
Plans entailed the removal of some native vegetation – to be counteracted with the planting of trees at a different site – yet to be determined.
In October 2013 MMBCC submitted a formal planning application to council which included the removal of only nine immature trees – the cost for which now has been quoted at $28,500.
It is believed that at that time the cost of removing these trees was minimal but has risen due to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries reviewing its policies on native vegetation removal in December.
