BENALLA Hockey Club scored a rare double, with the women’s and men’s B grade teams winning their respective grand finals in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association B grade section.
The Benalla women’s team won a thrilling grand final against Euroa in Shepparton on September 6, to become premiers for 2014.
In a tight affair, the team, with Mansfield’s Rhonda Carpenter a key member, managed to hold off Euroa to win by two goals.
Both teams went out hard, with Benalla’s attacking line-up of centre forward Amy Welsh and inners Lauren Cheetham and Livinya Dean charging through for an early goal by Cindy Findlow on the wing.
Euroa’s speedy forwards had Benalla’s midfield on their toes.
Ophelia Tevelein played her best game yet in her first season of hockey as half-back, with some crucial turnovers to centre-half Carpenter who handled the switches with her usual skill.
Siobhan Halligan and Zannie Randell made some magnificent runs through the centre and down the wing, to place the ball in Benalla’s goal circle.
