Specialised police officers targeting illegal shooting

A LOCAL youth will face court this November after being caught illegally spotlighting deer from his vehicle last Wednesday night.

Facing an assortment of charges, the 18-year-old man has also been issued with a notice to surrender his car for impounding under hoon legislation.

It follows after he fled from police when he was found to be illegally spotlighting deer on Blue Range Road at around midnight on Wednesday, September 17.

Taking off in his vehicle, the youth then proceeded to throw ammunition, parts of his firearm and his spotlight out the window as police pursued him for almost two kilometres.

“We are trying to nip these young guys in the bud,” Detective Sergeant Shannon Murphy said.

“Police from Mansfield and Benalla combed the area for more than two hours to retrieve the pieces thrown out of the vehicle.”
