Farewell Bill, and thanks

SPECIAL SOUVENIRS: Mr Sykes (left) receives some special mementos from council CEO David Roff, among them were a lifetime parking pass (he has spent so much time at events here) and some potable water, to remind him of his work with the shire on the Domestic Waste Water Management Scheme, and the debate about what potable water actually is. THERE was a good turnout at Mansfield council chambers last week to farewell retiring Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla).

Councillors, community leaders and people from the outlying areas of the shire were on hand to thank Mr Sykes for his hard work for the Mansfield area during his 12 years as the local representative in State Parliament.

The common theme in the speeches that were made was Mr Sykes’ dedication and commitment to the area and its people.

Mayor Ray Robinson commented on Mr Sykes’ constant availability.

“He is a down to earth, practical man who always seems to be able to make himself available,” Cr Robinson said.

“This gathering is a cross section of a community that has benefited from Bill’s tenure in parliament.

“We are one of the fastest growing shires in Victoria and, in part, we can attribute this to Bill.”
