More money in fox skins than scalps

TRADING IN: Fox pelts are worth more to fur traders than cashing in for bounties according to local farmer Brendan Mahoney.

ALMOST 500 fox scalps and five wild dog skins were handed in to the Mansfield DEPI office last Wednesday during their bounty collection.

It brings the totals for the year to just over 5000 fox scalps and 106 wild dog skins.

However, long time Merrijig fox hunter Brendan Mahoney said there was more money to be made in selling fox pelts for fur rather than handing them in.

“I’ve shot 64 for the year so far,” he said.

“And I only shoot in the Merrijig area – there’s buyers who want the fur and pay good money for it.”

In the same time, Brendan has also caught two wild dogs – though he believes there are many more out there.
