Delatite starts season with a win

CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS: Matt Stevenson sends down another thunderbolt against Violet Town on Saturday in the Cleary Shield. PHOTO: Peter Hunt

DELATITE Cricket Club 1st XI commenced the 2014 season with a convincing win over Violet Town last Saturday in the opening round of Cleary Shield cricket at the Lords Oval.

With the absence of captain Andrew Startin, club coach and new dad (congrats Bulldog) Matt Stevenson won the toss and had no hesitation sending Violet Town in on a green top wicket.

Young left arm speedster Tyler Smith soon had the opposition in all sorts of trouble after sending opener Simon Holmes back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.

Violet Town was eventually dismissed for just 121, however, Delatite could have had the opposition dismissed much sooner had vital catches been taken.

Bowling honors went to Smith with 3/9, Pete Scales 3/11 and Matt Stevenson with 2/10.

Delatite opening batsmen Lachie Christopher and newcomer to the club, Dean Shaw from Heatherhill CC on the Mornington Peninsula, put on 37 for the opening partnership.
