CHASING a total of just 111, the Delatite 1st XI made very hard work of reaching this meagre total by Warrenbayne in round six of Cleary Shield cricket last Saturday.
What probably didn’t help Delatite’s cause was the loss of opening batsman Lachie Christopher to an ankle injury he suffered last Thursday.
Losing stand-in opener Patrick Marks in the second over was also not a good start, however, a 56 run partnership between Dean Shaw and captain Andrew Startin gave the Delatite team some respite.
That relief was to be rather short-lived as Delatite crumbled to be 6/73 due to some very accurate bowling from the Warrenbayne medium-pace attack of Travis King and Jarrod Winzer.
A vital partnership of 61 between Shaw and Rumesh Ranasinghe eventually saw Delatite take the match points.
Ranasinghe added great support to Shaw to finish on 20, but it was the determination and skill of opening batsman Shaw who made 97 that gave Delatite their sixth consecutive win for the season.
