Local ballkids ready to roll

READY TO ROLL: Tynan Mims gets in some last minute practice on his home court before heading to Melbourne last week for the Australian Open.

BIG time tennis hits Melbourne this week with the Australian Open having started on Monday.

As well as bringing together all of the world’s top female and male players, there is a huge army of support staff and volunteers who are vital to the event’s success.

This includes almost 400 ballkids, with Jem Davies and Tynan Mims from Mansfield as part of the ballkids team.

Decked out in bright orange tops, black shorts and gleaming white shoes, both boys have already scampered about the courts last week at the qualifying rounds, before the tournament proper which started this week.

At the induction last week, all the ballkids had their photo taken with tournament number two seed Maria Sharapova, and received their final instructions before commencing work on the Wednesday.

And it’s not just the main Open tournament that happens, there are also legends matches, the Junior Australian Open, and the Wheelchair Championships on as well, so both boys are likely to be involved in a variety of different matches.
