Violet Town overpowers Cleary Shield leaders

AFTER 10 rounds, the Delatite First XI has suffered its first loss in the Benalla District Cricket Association’s (DCA) Cleary Shield competition, when it went down to second-placed Violet Town in last Saturday’s one-day clash at the Violet Town Recreation Reserve.

With the absence of regular captain Andrew Startin, stand-in captain for Delatite, Matt Stevenson, won the toss and elected to bat.

A handy 28 run partnership between Dean Shaw (17) and Lachie Christopher (34) got the visitors off to a flying start.

Mitch Purcell (15) and Christopher put on a further 32 until Purcell skied a Lachlan Ellis delivery that was easily caught by Mitchell Grant.

This fairly reasonable start was short-lived, as the Violet Town bowlers proceeded to cut a swathe through the Delatite middle order that soon saw the score agonisingly crawl to just 5 for 61 from 28 overs.

A further 37 run partnership between Christopher and 200 game veteran Peter Scales (26) showed some promise, but this came too late, as overs were quickly running out for a competitive total to be achieved.
