Still hoping for roundabout in budget

ROUND ABOUT NEXT YEAR: It is hoped funding for a new roundabout at the Highett and Malcolm streets intersection will be part of the council’s 2015/16 budget.

FURTHER concept designs are under way for a new roundabout at the Highett and Malcolm streets intersection, tabled for inclusion in the 2015/16 council budget.

Responding to concerns from the community, engineers at the Mansfield Shire Council have come up with a basic concept plan, featured in the Mansfield Courier on January 28.

Since then, Amer Tawfik, engineering and works manager at the council, has confirmed plans are under way for a concrete proposal that will be included in next year’s financial budget.

“We will include the project budget … (for) council to consider,” Mr Tawfik said.

“The project is in the early stages and requires further discussion with council and will require consultation and approval by VicRoads, and support from Victoria Police, but we have received several complaints regarding this intersection – the roundabout will improve safety, traffic flow and provide for higher capacity at the intersection.”

Estimated to cost up to $500,000, the roundabout could potentially take up to three months to complete, but Mr Tawfik said council was well aware of peak usage times and would undertake works during school holidays.
