MERTON cricket team defeated top side Benalla at the Benalla Showgrounds on Saturday.
Merton coming off two losses and Benalla in good form saw the home side on top from the word go, with the visitors batting first, being 5/41 at one stage before Sanford and Jenkins combined to change the game’s momentum.
They helped Merton to struggle to reach 9/93 on the slow Showgrounds wicket and outfield, with Noye 15, Wayne Sanford 29no and Jenkins 12 the top scorers for the Merton side.
Webster and Vallender both with 3/15 were the pick of Benalla’s bowlers.
Missing a number of regular players, Merton dug deep and backed their bowlers in the field to have Benalla 4/24, led by a fine spell of bowling from Jarrod Cummins with 5/21 and James Tehan 1/29.
However, when McFarlane and Webster combined with 20 runs apiece and some late hitting from Braddock with 24 it looked like Benalla would take the points.
