Eagles face the best

EASTER Saturday saw the Benalla Saints visit the Eagles Nest for round one of the GVFL competition.

Any thought that Benalla might have had a ‘hangover’ after last year’s grand final loss were put aside as Benalla was a class above, defeating the Eagles by 64 points.

A few late Eagles goals injected some life into the contest, but Benalla was well on top for most of the game.

Not that Mansfield was disgraced – any team in the GVFL would have been hard pressed against the Saints’ midfield of Luke Morgan, Will and Jimmy Martinello, Josh Mellington and Nick Warnock – a handful for any opposition.

As it was, Mellington finished with six goals and Morgan three.

From the start both sides were hard at it with the first 15 minutes seeing the Eagles on top.
