Clarissa a busy bee with her sweet backyard hobby

RAMPANT HOBBY: Sitting by her four bee hives, Clarissa Leatham cheers on the bees even though the cooler weather means they prefer to stay home.

WHAT could be more exciting than having a swarm of bees in the backyard, especially if they are under control and friendly?

Clarissa Leatham thinks this is the way to go, with ‘her girls’ housed in hives, all producing honey.

She started around four years ago and the bees are now in their second winter.

After completing a course in beekeeping with MACE, Clarissa bought herself a nuc (nucleus colony), comprising a queen bee plus a couple of helpers; this is the beginning of a hive.

As with all hobbies, the spark caught on quickly and she next captured three wild swarms, giving her four hives.

When it comes to bee information this beekeeper is the one to ask as she is full bottle on most bee facts, while modestly denying being an expert.
