CLIENTS of Mansfield’s Highett Street Veterinary Clinic will be familiar with Janine Young, who has worked there for approximately 15 years.

What few people know is that Janine is not only involved with the sick and injured creatures that come into the practice, but has a lifelong connection with breeding, showing and judging horses.

“I always wanted to be a veterinary nurse, and I always wanted a horse,” she said of her childhood dreams.

Her dream of owning a horse became a reality when she took on a part time job at age 17 and used her salary to buy a horse and the necessary trappings.

Janine kept her horse “Handsome” in a local apple orchard, but moved him when the apples ripened, “to stop him eating the lot”.

The pair would ride down to the Dandenong Creek where both would enjoy a feed of blackberries.
