Three wild donkeys replace pet Zak

WILD CREATURES: These donkeys – Eeyore (left), Maurice and Carlos - were rounded up in the Northern Territory and are now housed in a Mansfield paddock for their Melbourne owners.

FORMER locals Emily Rust and James Rath had a pet donkey Zak that was so friendly it used to come to kids’ parties and was always present at Carols by Candlelight at Christmas time.

Sadly, Zak died just over two years ago and Emily and James were looking for a replacement.

They heard of a deceased estate sale at Echuca and went along to buy themselves another pal, but somehow ended up with four.

These donkeys on sale were wild – having been rounded up in the Northern Territory – and the males were being sought by farmers who wanted to use them as protection for their stock.

The buyers went around the pens looking at the animals before the sale, choosing those they thought were interactive, and perhaps not too skittish.

Choosing a black and a grey, they began to think the grey would be separated from its friend so they took that one as well – that’s three males.
