Friends of Venilale celebrate 10 years

East Timor relationship is getting stronger

A DECADE ago a Mansfield delegation visited Venilale in East Timor and so began a friendship that has stood the test of time. Some 10 years later the friendship relationship is stronger than ever, with growing links and expanding projects. Pictured at a dinner in Mansfield last week to mark the milestone were (from left) Prof Damien Kingsbury, Rae Kingsbury, Mansfield Shire chief executive officer Alex Green, Timor-Leste Ambassador to Australia Abel Guterres, Mansfield Shire mayor Marg Attley, Michelle Harmer, David Foster and Heather Matthew.

HOW do we know you will come back and do the things you have promised?

That was the question posed by a village chief when the Mansfield Shire delegation visited Venilale in East Timor in 2005.

Much to the delight of that village chief, Mansfield has lived up to its promises.

Ten years later the friendship relationship is stronger than ever, with growing links and expanding projects.

To mark the milestone, Friends of Venilale held a celebration at the Delatite Hotel with guests coming from near and far.

A highlight of the evening was a Skype connection with Venilale.
