Grand final Friday public holiday: few fans among traders

THE public holiday gazetted for this Friday for the Grand Final Day parade saw a common set of responses from traders in the Mansfield central business district.

In a survey conducted with High Street traders by the Mansfield Courier, not one person had anything good to say about the public holiday.

However, words such as ‘ridiculous’, ‘shocking’, ‘appalling’ and worse were used to describe the day.

A lot of the traders in Mansfield are owner/operators so the issue of staff penalty rates doesn’t arise.

Some owners, who would normally have the day off, however, will work themselves to save on those penalty rates.

A business like the High Country Bakehouse will be closing as they get hit double – penalty rates for counter staff during the day and for the bakers at night.
