MANSFIELD runners Eliza Pollock and Tynan Mims both came home with a medal from the School Sports Victoria State Athletic Championships last week.
Held at the Albert Park athletics track, four runners from Mansfield competed after qualifying at the Albury Regionals a few weeks ago.
Running in the 18 – 20 year old 800m event, Eliza Pollock put in a very strong performance to take the silver medal, while in the 1500m, Tynan held out a fast finishing competitor to take the bronze medal, with only three seconds separating second to fourth.
Eliza also ran the 1500m, placing fourth, while Tynan also ran in the 800m coming sixth, and seventh in the open 2km steeplechase, a terrific effort given the other runners were all open age, and the height of the jumps set accordingly.
Another top Mansfield runner Brooke Mullins just missed out on a podium finish, coming fourth in the girls 14 years 1500m.
Hard luck story of the day came from Oscar Shapiro, who was coming second in the boys 16 years 110m hurdles, but was knocked off his stride in the closing stages when the spikes from the runner in the next lane accidentally spiked Oscar’s hand, virtually bringing him to a stop.
