Local artists scoop the pool

LOCAL WINNERS: Judge Marian Rennie (centre) was sure of her choice of Pamela Moore as winner of the Harry and Claire Friday Foundation Award, and Ralph Bristow – winner of the Rotary Art Prize. The three are standing in front of Mr Bristow’s winning work.

OPENING night of the Mansfield District Hospital Auxiliary Art Show is always a fun event, even if somewhat hot.

After a welcoming speech by auxiliary president Anne Mudge, on this occasion the opening was orchestrated by local medico Will Twycross, who – as ever – did not fail to amuse.

Welcoming the way the evening had been structured, Dr Twycross said it would involve starting with the doctor, then moving to the undertaker (Mick McCormack) and finally the accountant (Euan Friday).

Commenting on his long association with auxiliaries, he also wondered why there were no men’s auxiliaries, and concluded from this that they only exist on the X chromosome.

“For a regional art show with 167 works of art on display, this is probably one of the best in the state,” he said.

Mick McCormack spoke about the Rotary Art Prize presented to the best artist in the exhibition and Euan Friday on the Harry and Claire Friday Foundation Award for the best local artist in the exhibition.
