Local boxers to represent Victoria

CHAMPS: Local boxers JayJay Curtin and Shaun Thomas will represent Victoria when they fight against the International Thai Team next month.

LOCAL boxers Shaun Thomas and JayJay Curtin have qualified for the state Victorian boxing team, due to head to Thailand for an international competition next month.

Former bull riding superstars, the two young men made the crossover into boxing after being inspired by JayJay’s dad, a former UK boxing amateur champion himself.

Fighting last weekend at the 2015 Boxing Victoria Championship, the boys proved they were “country tough” scoring a gold and silver medal.

Shaun, in just his fourth competition fight, found himself up against the experienced Bendigo boxer Tom Fitzgerald in the 60kg lightweight open youth category.

Shaun, who has only been boxing for 14 months, came away not only with a gold medal, but also the Victorian title.

Meanwhile 15-year-old JayJay took on the experienced 17-year-old fighter Furkan Demirkaya, again fighting for only the fourth time in his competition career.
