FINALS BOUND: Sam Guppy with his swag of medals won at the regional little athletics finals. Sam has now qualified for state finals in Melbourne.

OVER the weekend Little Athletics Victoria held its regional finals.

Athletes from age under 9 upwards are allowed to nominate to compete in up to four events for a chance to then contest the state finals.

Sam Guppy was the only Mansfield athlete to nominate this year, he travelled to Albury to compete against athletes from across the northern region.

On the Saturday he competed in two track events, the first being the 800m.

The whole field went out fast, however, Sam held his nerve and came home strong running down three other competitors to break the three minute barrier for the first time and finish with a silver medal.

The other track event was the 200m, the last on the program for the day, the pace was fast and furious and a hot tired boy finished a commendable fifth.
