TOP MAN: Hayden Fletcher of Jamieson was named 2015 Sportsperson of the Year at the annual dinner held at the Mansfield Golf Club last Wednesday night. Hayden is among the nation’s top BMX riders and is aiming to go to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

A CLOSE call between sports stars finally saw Hayden Fletcher named Rotary Club and Mansfield Courier Sportsperson of the Year for 2015.

Fletcher, at only 16 years of age, is Australia’s top BMX rider taking out the AA pro men’s event earlier last year and has his sights firmly set on the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Having only a bush track to train on at Howqua, he travels long distances to compete in his chosen sport with the National BMX fraternity scratching their heads on how a kid with no local track can be so competitive against the fastest second year junior elite riders in the country.

Hayden, with his dad Paul, have for many years now pushed to see a BMX track created in Mansfield with hopes for the future that this will happen and encourage more kids to take up the sport.

The top Junior Sportsperson award went to Hayley Wilson, now ranked about number three in the world and number one in Australia in her sport of skateboarding.

The encouragement award went to top cross country runner, Tynan Mims.
