IT doesn’t take long for Mansfield Shire councillor Paul Volkering, who was recently voted in for a second term as Mansfield mayor, to identify his council’s biggest test over the next 12 months.
“Trying to get our budget in order is going to be a key issue for the term of this council,” he said.
If he wasn’t already, Cr Volkering has had to fast become a financial realist after taking over as mayor at the start of 2017.
Council spending has tightened up under Cr Volkering’s stewardship, during a time which he has described as “a difficult 12 months”.
Against this backdrop, Cr Volkering, however, is looking ahead to some brighter spots over the next year of his tenure.
“We would like to try to move forward a bit and have some good news stories to bring to the community,” Cr Volkering told the Mansfield Courier last week.
