• Council to seek rise in our rates

    AT last week’s Mansfield Shire council meeting, a motion was unanimously carried to apply for a rate rise for 2019-2020.

    Councillor Paul Volkering motioned that the council “instruct the CEO to prepare necessary processes and documentation for a rate variation application”.

    The application comes after the discovery that Mansfield Shire has been overcharging ratepayers for their wastage service over the last 10 years, to the tune of $1.3 million a year.

    It comes off the back of a well-publicised case in Wodonga that was recently exposed by the Ombudsman, who found that Wodonga council’s practice of generating a surplus through extra waste disposal rates, and not using all of that money for waste disposal, was at odds with the intent of the Local Government Act.
