• Council split on new budget

    MANSFIELD Shire Council met for a special meeting last Tuesday, where the application to the Essential Services Commission for a rate rise was approved, along with the new budget draft, which was lucky to scrape through as a split council seemed hesitant to give it the green light.

    As has been published previously, council is seeking to raise rates to cover the lowering of waste charges, which council was found to be overcharging residents $1.2 million a year, and thus forced to be adjusted.

    An increase above the annual statewide rate cap of 2.5 per cent has to be approved by the State Government, so on September 18 council instructed the chief executive officer (CEO) to prepare the application, which was put before council last week.
