Bushfires spark a ‘State of Disaster’

GO HOME: Mansfield police patrolled bush camp grounds after a State of Disaster was declared on Friday, telling campers they needed to leave the Alpine National Park and state forests for safer locations.

AN unprecedented declaration of a State of Disaster, taking in six local government areas including Mansfield Shire, Mt Buller and Mt Stirling alpine resorts, remains in place as authorities continue to tackle a series of bushfires.

Rain and cooler temperatures early this week have aided authorities, but they said on Monday that elevated fire danger expected on Friday could still see blazes flair up again.

The Alpine National Park and all public land that falls within Mansfield Shire – including state forests – remain closed, as are Mt Buller and Mt Stirling alpine resorts.
