Rail trail marks 10 year anniversary

A TOURISM asset to Mansfield Shire has recently marked its 10th anniversary. Previously known as the 'Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail' and now called the 'Great Victorian Rail Trail(GVRT)', it was one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken by Mansfield Shire Council in partnership with Murrindindi and Mitchell shires. June 1, 2012 marked the official opening of the rail trail from Mansfield through to Tallarook and was opened by the then Minister for Regional Development, Simon Crean. Celebrating a fantastic 10–year milestone, the GVRT has brought increased tourism spending and recreational opportunities to communities along the trail. At the time of opening Mr Crean said the 134km of shared pathway had the potential to attract more than 130,000 visitors each year. "We expect people will enjoy the spectacular views and historical experience of the GRHCRT (now GVRT) each year whether cycling, walking or horse riding," Mr Crean said. Mr Crean mentioned the work and cooperation done jointly between the three shires, Mansfield, Mitchell and Murrindindi, saying it was a tremendous example of the power of local input, with local leaders and the community identifying the region's comparative advantages and turning them into competitive edge. Some 150 people gathered at Molesworth following the first opening at the Bonnie Doon rail bridge with guest speakers including project manager Ian Geer, Murrindindi Shire mayor John Walsh, rail trail committee of management chairperson Dr Will Twycross and Rail Trails Australia representative Damian McCrohan. Bicycle Network Victoria chief executive officer Harry Barber said at the time "134km rail trail without doubt, is an absolute jewel in Victoria's Rail Trail network". Mr Barber also said he expected the rail trail to bring significant benefits to communities in Mansfield, Murrindindi and Mitchell shires through increased tourism spending and recreational opportunities. And this seems to have been proven as the rail trail, particularly between Mansfield and Bonnie Doon, sees a steady stream of users throughout the year.
