IT may have been a smaller yarding to that of the 1000 head yarded last month, but last Friday's offering at the Wangaratta Store Sale maintained strong buyer interest and hefty prices.
Around 700 head of locally bred cattle saw all types represented with some better lines of cattle also offered.
"There was still very strong demand for all types," said Corcoran Parker agent Justin Keane.
"Although it wasn't one of our feature yardings, strong competition from local buyers and those from southern NSW saw market prices consistent with what's been happening of late.
"We're seeing enormous money paid for store cattle."
Friday's yarding saw several pens of Hereford and Angus steer cattle, under 250kg, fetch more than $8 a kilogram while the best heifers – a pen of seven Angus weighing 243kg – made 687c/kg.
Greta South cattle producers A & K Porker topped the cows and calves with their pen of 4 x 4 Angus/Limousin X cows with calves fetching $4360 per unit (cow and calf).
The cows were all in calf and averaged 595 kilograms while the calves at foot each weighed around 260 kilograms.
Mr Keane said excellent seasons locally over the past 18 months, coupled with big demand and limited supply for cattle, continued to produce excellent prices for local producers.
"Our herd numbers have probably been fairly consistent and we haven't seen any huge herd rebuild," he said.
"Certainly in central and northern NSW and beyond we are seeing a big investment in female cattle.
"This big demand and limited supply has built up over three to four years of dry times.
"We've had a terrific run so far...we're still in the swing of getting a true autumn break.
"We'd like to see an inch or more of rain in the next few weeks."
