AS of the latest observations, the rivers surrounding Mansfield continue to be havens for trout enthusiasts, with an exciting addition to the angler's repertoire – the Jamieson River. Alongside the well-established hotspots of Delatite River, Howqua River, and Goulburn River, the Jamieson River adds diversity to the angling experience, offering pristine waters and a promising trout population. Delatite River. In the upper reaches of the Delatite River, brown and rainbow trout are actively feeding on insects during the early mornings and late afternoons. Successful fly patterns include classic dry flies like Royal Wolf, Elk Hair Caddis, and Adams. Nymphs such as Pheasant Tail and Hare's Ear have also proven effective, mimicking the prevalent insect hatches in the region. Howqua River. Stable water levels in the Howqua River create optimal conditions for both wading and bank fishing. To entice brown trout, anglers are finding success with streamer flies like Woolly Bugger and Muddler Minnow. Additionally, exploring the riverbanks with nymph patterns such as Prince Nymph and Copper John can yield satisfying results, especially in deeper pools. Goulburn River. Downstream from Eildon, the Goulburn River offers ideal conditions for trout fishing. Fly anglers targeting active trout in riffles and runs are using streamers like Zonker and Sculpin patterns. In the deeper pools, nymphs such as Zug Bug and Stonefly patterns are proving effective in enticing both brown and rainbow trout. Jamieson River. The Jamieson River, a new contender in the trout fishing scene, introduces exciting possibilities. For brown and rainbow trout in its pristine waters, anglers are having success with terrestrial patterns like Chernobyl Ants and Hopper patterns. Emerger patterns such as RS2 and Blue-winged Olive are also proving effective during hatches. Tactics and Tips. Diversity in fly selection is crucial, with anglers recommended to carry an assortment of dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Light to ultralight fly rods in the 3-5 weight range are suitable for these river environments. Observing insect hatches and adjusting fly presentations accordingly remains a key factor in successful fly fishing outings. In conclusion, Mansfield's rivers, including the newly highlighted Jamieson River, offer a rich tapestry for trout fishing enthusiasts. Armed with a variety of flies and an understanding of local trout behaviour, anglers can embark on rewarding expeditions in these picturesque waterways. Tight lines and happy fishing!
